Once you have been able to get a judgment on the deadbeat, you must remain vigilant. Depending on the originating state, your judgment can expire after a few years. Some states hold that judgements against payors are good for 5 years, some say 7 years and even others allow 10 years before a judgment expires, rendering your child support arrears as nothing more than a piece of paper. If you want to stay on top of it all, find out the statute of limitations in your originating state and be sure to RENEW it before it expires. Renew it and theoretically, (if you continue to renew so that you never go beyond the statute of limitations), you will be legally entitled to hound your deadbeat forever until you are paid in full. If you live longer than he does – you can hound his estate, and pass the rights over to your children to hound his estate, if necessary.
